London Bricks in India: Why This Clean, Exposed Brick Is Everywhere Now

Walk past a new café in Chandigarh or a farmhouse gate on the edge of Gurugram, and you’ll probably notice the same thing. Neat red brick walls. No plaster. No paint. Just sharp edges and even lines running all the way up.

Most builders in north India would call these London bricks.

The name makes a lot of people think they are imported. They aren’t. London bricks in India are locally made, machine made clay bricks with a smooth or lightly textured face, crisp corners and a very even size. The name is really a trade term, borrowed from the look of old exposed brick buildings in England. Depending on the city and the dealer, you’ll also hear them called wirecut bricks, exposed bricks or facing bricks.

What makes a London brick different?

A regular country brick, the kind you see stacked near a highway bhatta, is shaped by hand in a wooden mould, dried in the open and fired in a traditional kiln. Sizes vary a little. Edges chip. The colour changes from one brick to the next. That’s perfectly fine for walls that will be plastered anyway.

London bricks are different because they are meant to be seen. Well-prepared clay is pushed through a machine called an extruder, which forms a long, solid column. A tight wire then cuts that column into individual bricks, which is why they’re also called wirecut bricks. After careful drying, they are fired in a kiln at high temperature.

The result? Almost every brick is the same size. Faces are flat, corners stay sharp, and the colour is far more even. Many London bricks also come with holes, usually three or eight, which make them lighter and help the mortar grip better.

Why are London bricks so popular in India now?

Partly, it’s the look. Exposed brick has a warm, honest feel that suits modern homes, restaurants, offices, schools and even hospitals.

But there are practical reasons too. An exposed brick wall doesn’t need plaster or paint on the outer face. That saves money on material and labour, and it saves you from repainting every few years. Good fired clay also ages well. The colour doesn’t wash out the way paint does in heavy monsoon rain.

Clay bricks tend to hold heat slowly as well, which can help keep indoor spaces a little more comfortable during long north Indian summers.

And honestly? They just look good.

Where can you use them?

Front elevations are the most common use. But London bricks work just as well for boundary walls, feature walls inside living rooms, staircases, columns, garden planters and café interiors. Architects often pair them with wood, glass or raw concrete for a clean, modern finish. Some also combine them with clay jalis to let light and air pass through a wall.

One small caution. For walls that face heavy rain or stay damp for long periods, a suitable clear water-repellent coating can help keep moss and white salt marks (efflorescence) away. Ask your manufacturer which product works best with their bricks.

What to check before you buy

Don’t judge only by the showroom sample. Ask to see a few bricks from the actual lot you’ll receive. Place them side by side and check that the size and colour match. Tap two bricks together. A clear, ringing sound usually means the brick is well fired, while a dull sound can point to under-firing. Look for hairline cracks, lime spots and chipped corners.

Ask for test results for compressive strength and water absorption. A serious manufacturer will have them.

And here’s a tip many people learn too late: order enough bricks for the whole project in one go. Colour can shift slightly between different firings, and on an exposed wall, even a small difference shows.

Why the manufacturer matters more here

With plastered walls, poor bricks can hide. With exposed walls, nothing hides. Every uneven edge and every patchy colour is on display for years. That is why choosing experienced machine made bricks manufacturers matters even more for London bricks than for ordinary construction.

Among the many brick manufacturers in India, look for a company with a long track record, proper quality systems and a wide range of finishes to choose from.

One name worth adding to your shortlist is Mahaluxmi Bricks. Operating from the Panchkula–Shahabad Highway in Haryana since 1982, the ISO 9001 certified company produces exposed wirecut bricks, special shapes, jalis and clay tiles for homes and commercial buildings. If you are planning an exposed facade and want to explore London bricks in India, their website is a good place to see the range.

The bottom line

A plastered wall covers everything. An exposed brick wall shows everything. If you’re going to let your bricks be the finish, choose them with the same care you’d give to tiles, wood or stone.

It’s a decision you’ll look at every single day.
